Uuhhh....remember when I said don't wait by the phone?

...yeah, didn't really call that one right. You see, despite it looking like that last post went up on May 29th, it actually didn't make it up 'til June 2nd or so (Blogger dates posts on the day they are started, not finished).

And on June 5th Grace Ella Reid was born - 7lbs, 10 oz and very healthy.

I may do a post later with some more details on the birth story, but here are the highlights. It was about 25 hours all told for her to be born. My midwives and doula have dubbed her the drama queen based on how the labour and delivery played out - for example, she had almost completely descended the pelvis and then decided she needed to change position so went back up, turned around and came back down again (yeah, so it's kinda like I went through the last stages of labour twice). We had a couple tense moments where her heart rate and my blood pressure tanked, so it was great we were in the hospital. I actually ended up having an (male) OB come in periodically during my labour and apparently Grace would calm right down whenever he was in the room so it became a bit of a joke that while I wanted a midwife, obviously the baby wanted a (male) doctor at the birth (perhaps an indication of her taste in men?). We ended up being checked into the hospital for 24 hours, which is unusual for midwife births since they do follow up care at home, but it was actually a really good thing for us to have some time alone and nurses to look after us.

We have already had a couple interesting firsts. The morning she was born one of my midwives had to do a radio interview on the 15th anniversary of midwifery in Ontario and Grace was mentioned (though not by name). She has also been to her first party - our housing co-op had a potluck planned on what happened to be the day we came home from the hospital - and she was included in the toast as the newest member of the co-op (Rob and I were plenty happy to partake in great food that we did not have to prepare - thanks neighbours!).

Overall, I think we are all adjusting well. Rob and I have been getting sleep when we can get it. Rob has been great and has been indulging me a bit too much (if there is such a thing). The house is a mess and we haven't sat down for a real meal together since getting home (eating in shifts has been interesting), but I don't think either of us would change anything. We have had a couple home visits from the midwives and our doula has been by, everyone is taking good care of us.
